RULES

TEAM AND POSITIONS

Teams composed of five forwards, one scrum half and four backs.

Scrums are composed of just five players from each team.

Your squad can be made up of a maximum of 20 players.

All players must have been registered with your team before the completion starts.

PLAYING AREA

Tens is played on a standard rugby field as defined in the International Rugby Board’s handbook. The field measures up to 100m long and 70m wide. On each goal line are H-shaped goal posts.


POOL ROUNDS

Teams will play a round-robin format within their groups. Each team shall play three matches in the pool stages of the competition.

POINT SYSTEM

3 for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss, 0 for a no-show (Aditional points for beer league boat races)

FINALS

The two top teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals for the cup and bowl. The teams will play on a cross-over basis as determined by the draw.

The bottom two teams in each group will proceed to the semi- Finals for the Bowl and shiled. The teams will play on a cross-over basis as determined by the draw.

Tiebreakers

  • Head-to-head result between the tied teams.
  • Difference in points scored and allowed during pool play.
  • Difference in tries scored and allowed during pool play.
  • Points scored during pool play.
  • Coin toss.

VARIATIONS TO THE LAWS OF THE GAME

The Tournament By-Laws are based on the International Rugby Board (IRB) By-Laws. There are several variations in laws which apply to Tens Rugby, primarily to speed up the game and to account for the reduced number of players. 
The main changes can be summarised as follows:

  • Ten players per team on field
  • 5 player scrums
  • Maximum of 8 substitutes per game will full rolling subs.
  • Nine minute halves.
  • One minute half-time.
  • All conversion attempts must be drop-kicked. Conversions must be taken within 40 seconds of scoring a
  • In tens, the team which has just scored kicks off, rather than the conceding team, as in fifteen-a-side.
  • Yellow cards net a 2-minute suspension.
